Everybody and thing needs to be updated now and again.
A new hairstyle, suit of clothes and shoes uplifts a person and gets them ready for a new Season.
A home or room can benefit from a new coat of paint, draperies and furnishings as well.

It is old wisdom...our eyes being the windows to our souls. I have often wondered why Modigliani didn't paint the eyes of his subjects. I should say he didn't render atomically correct

eye paintings. But he still managed to convey a sense of the persons personality.

His art makes me wish to work harder at my art.

In 2009 I began to explore the concept of combining my studio art quilts with my love of painting.

The process involved drawing on either muslin, solid white, or light colored fabrics that had been ironed to a piece of freezer paper. The freezer paper acted as a good foundation for the fabric and kept it from moving while I penciled on my design.

After I had gotten the drawing finished I removed the paper added cotton batting and a backing fabric and procceded to treat it as a whole cloth wall quilt.

I machine stitched in black thread the basic outlines of the design. Once I felt that I had captured the look I was going for I hand quilted in the rest of the drawing. Upon completing the quilting, I bound the edges as you would do on a regular art quilt. I attached the rod pocket and label to the back of the quilt before I proceeded to begin the painting.The paints I use are artist and craft acrylics.

I had been reading about the artist Modigliani at the time and I loved the style of his portraits. I thought they would make interesting subjects for my quilted canvases. I recreated his painting of the Lipchitz couple.

I was pleased with the outcome of the art quilt. And I decided to enter it into the Bloomington Indiana Heritage Quilt Show in their Fabric Art category.

The Lipchitz won a First Place Ribbon and a $500.00 monetary award.

These small art quilts came about while I was experimenting with tyvek. After painting several pieces of tyvek with acrylic paints, I cut them into odd shapes and distressed them using a heat tool. As I was placing and playing with the pieces on my flannel work board, it struck me that they looked like a ripped ladies corset.

Using that idea, I machine sewed the pieces down on a selected batik fabric. I embroidered, hand quilted and hand stitched lace, ric rac and gold netting onto the corset. At the time I was preparing this piece to send to Somerset Magazine's Artist Challenge-Chocolate-.

I used several hand stamps on the piece and made the tag using a stamp, some labels from several bite size pieces of chocolate plus a piece of acrylic painted used dryer sheet for the corset lace. I called the art quilt, A Goddess's Secret to Serenity...Chocolate.

These art quilts came about after reading Surfaces for Stitch by Gwen Hedley.
In Chapter 2 ,Creating the Surfaces, there is a section dealing with using tyvek. Tyvek is a very strong material that has many commercial applications. It is water-resistant and will not tear. It feels like a thin plastic but looks like paper. With heat applications it will bubble and shrink.

Upon viewing the Gees Bend Quilts Exhibit, I was inspired by their abstract designs and use of color and went about creating smaller versions of these beautiful quilts. I changed some of the original details and added some effects of my own. I had loved the primitive look of the piecing and quilting that went into the making of the originals and I chose to duplicate that feeling by hand ripping the strips of fabric , hand piecing and hand quilting my small replica quilts. To reproduce the primitive quilting that I so admired in the originals, I hand embroidered in white Perle cotton floss the quilting designs found in the originals. The fabrics I chose to use were 100% cotton fabrics and over 90% of them were hand dyed as well.

In 1997 this art quilt was sent to the International Quilt Exhibit in Seoul, Korea. At the time I was clerking at Kay England's quilt shop Quilt Quarters. Kay knew the sponsors of the show and they had asked her to send a selection of American quilts. She let any of her employees who had a quilt ready submit one for the exhibit. That summer I had had the opportunity to visit Australia with my husband. I wandered around Sidney ,while my husband attended his business meetings, there I found a shop that had rolls of cotton fabrics printed with aboriginal motifs. I purchased several yards. Upon returning home I designed this art quilt. It is a very international quilt; fabrics from Australia and America, made in America and exhibited in Korea.
